What’s the Buzz?
2017
This painting has been sold to a private collector 3/11/2020.
Species illustrated: Bumble Bee (Bombus sp.), Blue Daisy (Felicia amelloides), Lemon Bee Balm (Monarda citriodora), and Bee Balm (Monarda sp.)
The importance of bees as pollinators is widely recognized, but when it comes to pollination methods, not all bees are created equal. Bumble Bees, which are native to North America, use a technique known as “buzz pollination” that cannot be performed by introduced Honey Bees (Apis sp.). Rapid vibration of the wings dislodges pollen that is inaccessible to other pollinators. Tomatoes are an example of plants that require buzz pollination to fruit.
24x36 oil on canvas.
