Ghost Visited by a Giant
2017
Species illustrated: Ghost Orchid (Dendrophylax lindenii) and Giant Sphinx Moth (Cocytius antaeus)
The Ghost Orchid is an endangered plant found in the swamps of South Florida. It is leafless and uses its roots for photosynthesis (producing sugars using the energy in sunlight). Causes of the decline of the Ghost Orchid include habitat destruction and human-induced changes in water flow, as well as over-collecting. The rare Giant Sphinx Moth is the only species of moth with a long enough proboscis (tongue) to pollinate this plant.
