Species illustrated: Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia)
The Snow Leopard, with its thick fur, drab coloration, and tremendous leaping ability, is beautifully adapted to life in the mountains of Central Asia. This species is listed as endangered by the IUCN and one of the causes of its decline is climate change. An important prey of the Snow leopard is the Himalayan Blue Sheep, which grazes on grasses above the treeline. Warming climate is driving the treeline higher up the mountains, decreasing the areas in which Snow Leopards can find their natural prey.
