Little Cow, Little Calf Blues
2017
Species illustrated: Vaquita (Phocoena sinus)
The Vaquita, Spanish for “little cow,” is the world’s smallest cetacean and most endangered marine mammal; there are only about 30 of these diminutive porpoises left in the northern Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California), to which they are endemic. The main threat to their continued survival is illegal gill net fishing that targets a large fish known as the Totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi), with which they share their murky water habitat.
