House Burning Down
Species illustrated: American Pika (Ochotona princeps)
Hikers above treeline in the mountains of western North America are often startled by the distinctive alarm call of the American Pika. Unfortunately, the species is declining in multiple portions of its range, likely as a result of climate change. Rising temperatures interfere with summer foraging and decrease the winter snowpack, on which pikas depend for insulation. The plight of the pika should serve as an alarm call for climate change, which is also increasing the risk of wildfires in the West.
