Ten to One, Baby, One in Ten
Species illustrated: Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) and Milkweed (Asclepias sp.)
The Monarch Butterfly is absolutely dependent on Milkweed plants for its survival. Females lay their eggs on these plants and chemicals sequestered from the Milkweed by feeding caterpillars defend all life cycles from predators. According to the Butterfly Pavilion of Westminster, Colorado, it takes ten Milkweed plants to support a single Monarch. With precipitous declines in Milkweed numbers resulting from agriculture, you can help this beautiful butterfly by planting Milkweeds in your yard.
