Seeing Ghosts in the Thicket 2018
Seeing Ghosts in the Thicket
Species illustrated: Ivory-Billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) and Red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis)
The only two woodpeckers in the United States listed under the Endangered Species Act are the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker and the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker. Both are native to Southeastern forests and swamps, such as those found in the Big Thicket of Texas, and have declined as a result of logging. Debate continues over whether the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is actually extinct, while a variety of recovery efforts, including construction of artificial cavities, appear to be increasing the numbers of Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers.
